Zepbound^® (tirzapatide)

Tirzepatide mimics two hormones that help regulate blood sugar levels: GLP-1 and GIP. It stimulates insulin release, slows down stomach emptying, and reduces appetite, which can help you feel fuller for longer and support better blood sugar control.¹

Tirzepatide injections are used along with an individualized low-calorie, low-fat diet and exercise program to help with weight loss in obese adults or overweight adults who may also have high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease or high cholesterol. Tirzepatide is in a class of medications called glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. It works by increasing insulin available and decreasing glucagon (a hormone that controls the amount of glucose made by the liver) available in the body. Tirzepatide injection also works by slowing the movement of food through the stomach and may decrease appetite and cause weight loss.²

Zepbound® tirzepatide is given as a subcutaneous injection. Recommended sites include the abdomen (at least 2 inches from the belly button), the front or outer thigh, and the outer back of the upper arm (with assistance).
Key Points to Remember:
– Rotate injection sites with each dose and avoid areas with scar tissue, moles, or bruises. Do not inject through clothing.
– Ensure the liquid in the medicine pen is clear and colorless. Discard it if cloudy or discolored.
– Use a new needle for each injection.
– Never share medicine pens, as this can spread infections.
– Administer the medication on the same day each week, at any time, with or without meals.

Weight loss results with GLP-1s can vary widely from person to person. In a 72-week clinical trial studying Zepbound (15 mg) in patients without diabetes and with BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with a weight-related condition, the average weight loss was 20%, when paired with diet and exercise changes (compared to 3.1% with diet and exercise alone).⁴

Weight loss can vary among patients; some see results right away, while others may take a month or more. Consistency is key. Continue taking the medication as directed, and our medical team will adjust your dose as needed to optimize your weight loss. On average, a safe rate is typically 1-2 pounds per week (or 6-8 pounds per month), but individual targets may vary.

Our licensed providers will determine your eligibility for a Zepbound® tirzepatide injection prescription. Our general requirements include:
– You must be 18 years old or older
– Have a BMI greater than 27
– Are not pregnant
– Do not have certain medical conditions (i.e. thyroid cancer or hyperthyroidism, gastroparesis, pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis, MEN2 syndrome, or inflammatory bowel disease).

When starting tirzepatide, you’ll begin with a 2.5mg starter dose for the first 4 weeks. This helps your body adjust, so full effects may not be noticeable until your second month. Don’t worry; this is part of the process.
If you’ve previously taken a GLP-1 medication, you can start at your last prescribed dose by providing valid proof of your prescription during the health screening. Please note, if we do not receive the proper documentation, our providers will have to prescribe you at the starting dose.

There are no specific foods to avoid while taking tirzepatide, but follow your doctor’s or dietitian’s exercise and dietary recommendations. A healthy diet and regular exercise will help manage your weight and enhance the effectiveness of tirzepatide. To minimize side effects and support weight loss, consider these guidelines:
– Avoid fatty, fried, high-sugar, and unhealthy fast foods
– Limit alcohol consumption
– Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water

Common side effects of compound tirzepatide include nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, bloating, and belching. Not everyone will experience them, and many find that side effects diminish as their body adjusts to the medication. Inject the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if more than 4 days have passed since your missed dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not inject a double dose to make up for a missed one.²

Keep vials, syringes, needles, and medicines out of reach of children. Store away from light and heat. Refrigerate unused tirzepatide (36°F to 46°F [2°C to 8°C]), but not near the cooling element. Do not freeze; discard if frozen.
