We offer two types of GLP-1 medication, semaglutide and tirzepatide. Both semaglutide and tirzepatide are administered through a once-weekly subcutaneous injection using a tiny insulin syringe. For those who have a fear of needles, we also offer a once daily oral tablet option of semaglutide.

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone that your small intestine makes. It helps lower blood sugar levels, slow stomach emptying, and increases the feeling of fullness after you eat. GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone, causing the same action as the naturally occurring hormone. The satiety effect of GLP-1 agonists reduces your food intake, appetite, and hunger. The combined effects often result in weight loss.1
GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) is also a hormone that your small intestine makes that further enhances the body’s ability to use insulin and promote satiety.2

A drug may be compounded for a patient who cannot be treated with an FDA-approved medication, such as a patient who has an allergy to a certain dye and needs a medication to be made without it, or an elderly patient or a child who cannot swallow a tablet or capsule and needs a medicine in a liquid dosage form. Practitioners in hospitals, clinics, and other health care facilities sometimes provide compounded drugs to patients when an FDA-approved drug is not medically appropriate to treat them. In these situations, compounding can serve an important patient need. 3

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. This means that FDA does not verify the safety, effectiveness or quality of compounded drugs before they are marketed. However, Federal law addresses compounding by a licensed pharmacist in a state-licensed pharmacy, including provisions regarding insanitary conditions.3

These compounding pharmacies create customized medications tailored to individual prescriptions and are regulated by state boards and the FDA. They must adhere to USP (Pharmacopeial Reference Standards and Pharmacopeial Documentary Standards Method) standards and are also subject to specific sections of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA), including requirements for compounding drugs based on valid patient-specific prescriptions. The FDA also inspects these pharmacies to ensure they meet safety standards and do not compound under insanitary conditions.4

We compound GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP medications using pure active ingredients, sterile water, and inactive alcohol to maintain potency.

Compounded GLP-1s can’t promise weight loss, and results with GLP-1s can vary widely from person to person. In a 68- and 72-week clinical trial studying Wegovy (2.4 mg) and Zepbound (15 mg) in patients without diabetes and with BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with a weight-related condition, the average weight loss was 15% and 20%, when paired with diet and exercise changes (compared to 2.4% and 3.1%, respectively, with diet and exercise alone). 4, 5

Weight loss effects with taking GLP-1s are unique to each person. On average, these medications can lead to 15-20% weight loss over a year, translating to about 1-3 pounds a week for many. Factors like starting weight, diet, exercise, and metabolism all play a role, and results often come gradually. Combining GLP-1s with healthy eating and regular exercise can enhance your results.

Semaglutide mimics the effects of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in the body, facilitating the regulation of blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release, slowing gastric emptying which makes you feel full longer, and reducing appetite.

Tirzepatide mimics two hormones that help regulate blood sugar levels: GLP-1 and GIP. It stimulates insulin release, slows down stomach emptying, and reduces appetite, which can help you feel fuller for longer and support better blood sugar control.6

Choosing between semaglutide and tirzepatide depends on your goals. Both are effective GLP-1 agonists that promote weight loss. Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptor, increasing insulin production and enhancing feelings of fullness. In contrast, tirzepatide activates two receptors—GLP-1 and GIP—potentially making it about twice as effective in clinical studies. If you’re aiming for greater weight loss, tirzepatide may offer an advantage.

Injectable GLP-1s are generally more effective because they bypass the digestive system, leading to better absorption in the bloodstream. Injections typically deliver a higher dose of the medication compared to oral forms, resulting in more significant weight loss in clinical studies. However, individual factors like metabolism and adherence to treatment can influence effectiveness. While injections generally offer better results, some people prefer the convenience of oral medication.

Not at this time. For nausea, we recommend taking 10 to 25 milligrams (mg) of vitamin B6 every 8 hours. Some say it has results similar to Zofran, although side effects can include headaches and fatigue. You may request a prescription of Zofran from your primary care physician.
